Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

Introducing KAP with Miriam Kagan, LCAT

Guided by the compassionate and highly skilled Miriam Kagan, LCAT, this innovative approach seamlessly blends the potent effects of ketamine with the healing power of talk therapy and therapeutic art interventions. This fusion offers a new horizon of hope for individuals battling mental health challenges.

What is KAP?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy utilizes a psychedelic combined with talk therapy. KAP opens new pathways to healing, especially for conditions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD, all in a safe and manageable manner. What makes Miriam’s session unique is the integration of art therapy interventions to create a holistic experience that fosters profound and lasting change!

  • Ketamine is a legal, safe, and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hours after treatment and last for up to 2 weeks. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.

Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray, and using sublingual lozenges.

  • Ketamine blocks the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood.

Studies have shown that the benefits to mood and neurological growth can last up to two weeks after the Ketamine experience.

  • The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subsided, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happened during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are nonetheless clear.

You should know…

Independent Prescription: We will assist you in finding a qualified prescriber that will meticulously handle the ketamine prescription, teach you the “administration” process, ensuring that it will be both safe and professional.

Self-Administration: Patients bring the prescribed ketamine to our welcoming office and self-administer it in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Therapeutic Support: Under Miriam’s expert care, clients will navigate this therapeutic journey with the aid of compassionate talk therapy and therapeutic art interventions. These include meditation, creative expression, and the unique experience of “flo” therapy.

What will we be doing in each session?

  • The goal of the preparation session is to align on the process and set intentions for our KAP sessions together.

  • The ketamine dosing session lasts three hours and take place in-person at my office. During a dosing session, you will self-administer your ketamine in my office. Although a KAP dosing session may be largely an internal experience, Miriam will be present with you the entire time to hold space and provide support as needed.

  • After our KAP dosing session, we will meet for the integration therapy sessions to review the memories, thoughts, and insights that arose during your dosing session.
